Digital crafting is exactly what it sounds like: take any traditional arts and crafts hobby, and do it digitally instead. Scrapbooking, drawing, card making, painting, journaling, all of it can be done on a screen. And there are a lot of reasons why going digital might suit you better than the traditional version.
I started doing digital crafts in 2020, during the pandemic, when I suddenly had a lot of time at home and a strong urge to do something creative. The problem was that I can't paint or draw. But I could layer things on a screen and make them look pretty, so that's what I did. I started making digital stickers and digital papers, which are design assets people use for card making, journaling, scrapbooking, and all kinds of other digital crafts. And I never looked back.
If you're new here, hi! I'm a neurodivergent creative who writes about digital design, passive income from hobbies, and figuring out how to run a small business without burning out. Glad you found me! š

Eight reasons to start a digital crafting hobby
1. No mess
No spilled ink, no scattered paper scraps, no glitter in places it should never be. Everything happens on your screen, and when you're done you just close the program. For anyone who finds physical clutter overwhelming, this alone can be a reason to go digital.
2. No storage problem
Traditional crafting supplies take up a lot of space. Paper, tools, paints, fabric, storage boxes for all of the above. With digital crafting, everything lives on your computer or tablet. Your whole hobby fits in a folder.

3. You can take it anywhere
All you need is your laptop or iPad and you can work on your projects from anywhere. At home, on a trip, at a cafe. You don't need a dedicated craft room or a big table. If you want to draw digitally you might eventually want an iPad and stylus, but for many digital crafts a regular laptop is all you need to get started.
4. Resources you can use over and over
Physical craft supplies get used up. Digital tools and assets don't. Once you have a program and a collection of digital resources, you can use them as many times as you want without restocking anything.
5. It's affordable to get started
If you already have a computer or iPad, getting started doesn't have to cost much. Many programs offer free trials so you can experiment before committing, and monthly subscriptions are generally much more affordable than buying software outright used to be. For digital assets like textures, clipart, and brushes, a Creative Fabrica subscription is genuinely the best value I've found. At $4.99 a month you get unlimited access to millions of commercial use assets, which is pretty hard to beat.

6. Instant access to everything
One of my favorite things about digital crafting is that everything is available right now. You find something you love, you download it, and you can start using it immediately. No waiting for deliveries, no running out of supplies mid-project.
7. More flexibility and control
Digital tools give you options that traditional crafting simply can't. Undo a mistake in seconds, experiment with different color palettes without wasting materials, duplicate elements, resize things, work in layers. It's a level of creative control that's genuinely freeing once you get used to it.
8. A ready-made community
Because digital crafting happens online, the community is online too. You can find fellow digital crafters on Reddit, Facebook groups, Etsy, Pinterest, and YouTube. It's easy to find people who are into exactly what you're into, get feedback on your work, and learn new techniques from people who love the same things you do.
Thinking about trying a digital crafting hobby?
If any of this sounds appealing, digital crafting is a genuinely low-barrier hobby to start. You probably already have most of what you need. And if you want to go a step further and turn your hobby into a small income stream, I've written about that too.
